What sustains bees after we take their honey, wax, propolis, royal jelly & pollen?
How do bees survive once we take all their beehive byproducts? Do they start from scratch? Do they leave them a little bit? How & why do they keep going?
If the hive is to survive, all of its riches cannot be taken.
Bee-box bees may or may not have much/most of their riches removed. If not, they can continue along again and survive well as long as they have enough time to recoup before fall and winter weather. Some bee keepers do pretty much take all and then provide the hive bee food.
When taking riches from a wild hive, some people take everything thus allowing the hive to die. However, most do not take more than what the hive can give. Traditionally, wild honey harvesters were personally closer to the land and much more likely to be what we now call self-suffcient and/or fully dependent upon their agricultural, hunting, and fishing prowlness. – If you want more honey, you know not to kill the hive. Many actually treated “their” wild bees well for all of the advantages and riches they provided.

Bees
$19.98
The bee may have a brain the size of a grass seed, but in its brief, five-week life it works as a brood nurse, wax producer, comb builder, honey maker, home guard, and floral forager. Bees: Nature's Little Wonders invites readers to take a new look at creatures that are both familiar and wondrously odd. It considers the diversity and biology of bees, including their peculiar sociosexual arrangements (pity the poor drone), their quirky relationships with flowers, and their startling mental abilities: What are we to make of insects that communicate through symbolic dances? The book also addresses the mysterious syndrome known as colony collapse disorder and identifies opportunities for the conservation of pollinators. Enriched with cultural sidebars and complemented by a stunning collection of images, Bees is a must-read for conservationists, gardeners, and everyone else who cares about the world around them.
