Is this class assignment legit?

I attend a public high school, and today in my sports marketing class we were given a fund raising packet of Yankee Candle products and told we will be graded on how many items we sell, with 10 sales necessary for a 100%.

This assignment was justified by my teacher because “sales are extremely important to marketing”. The items listed in the catalog are rather expensive, with the cheapest option being an air freshener for $5.

Something about this assignment does not sit well with me, and I was wondering if anyone has heard of something like this occurring before. Is this legit, or is there something fishy about this assignment?
The money is going to DECA, the marketing club that is affiliated with my class. However, many students in the class are not DECA members, but they are still required to sell.

this doesn’t sound like an assignment to me at all, it sounds like a fundraiser. do you know who is receiving the money you make? if you don’t then there is definitely something weird going on. The marketing class at my school designed a shirt and sold it for $2 throughout the school. That sounds like a much better sales project than what you’re doing. good luck though.
